Carpe Diem: A Night Lamp Capturing the Moment of New Life

Life is a series of moments that shape our journey, and Carpe Diem, designed by Kin Man Cammy Sha, beautifully captures the most precious moment of all - the birth of a child. Inspired by the ubiquity of data in our lives, this night lamp combines technology, design, and emotion to create a truly unique piece.

The lampshade, made from acrylic, is divided into three parts. The upper and lower sections, fixed in size for every order, mimic the texture of an egg with a matte white and ceramic-like finish. The central part, however, is where the magic happens. It features a broken-line graph that represents a snapshot of big data - the global birth rate at the exact moment the newborn entered the world. This part is produced in transparent and matte finishes to maintain consistency in texture.

What sets Carpe Diem apart is its ability to be customized. By providing the date and time of birth in the online store, customers can create a truly personalized gift. The lamp not only creates a warm and cozy atmosphere in any room but also serves as a reminder of the joy and excitement that comes with welcoming a new family member.

Operating the lamp is simple. It can be placed in the living room or bedroom, allowing users to bask in its warm glow. The upper half of the lampshade can be easily removed, making it convenient to change the light bulb whenever necessary.

The Carpe Diem project, which started in February 2016 and concluded in May 2016, was brought to life in Hong Kong. One of the biggest challenges faced by the designer was creating variable designs based on different sets of data collected in the online store while maintaining aesthetic consistency.

This exceptional design has not gone unnoticed. Carpe Diem was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2017. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
